Greetings from Hoxton Square where between unfurling rolls of wrapping paper, wrestling with parcels and rootling around in the depths of cupboards, we find ourselves well on the way to the festive season. With Christmas spirit building, we thought it a good moment to shine a light on some of our beautiful books for children and nostalgic grown-ups – Foxed staff included.
Slightly Foxed Cubs is a series of collectable children’s books which strike a chord with many older readers and introduce a younger generation to writers whose marvelous books have, unaccountably, been allowed to slip out of print. Brendon Chase, written by Denys Watkins-Pitchford (1905–90) under the pseudonym ‘BB’, is one such offering. Faced with the end of the holidays and the prospect of school, who hasn’t dreamt of running away through the undergrowth? In Brendon Chase, this is precisely what three boys do. Full of finely observed detail from the natural world, Brendon Chase is a bewitching blend of adventure, natural history and high jinks.
In addition to Brendon Chase, BB’s well-loved adventure stories The Little Grey Men and Down the Bright Stream are available as a pair of limited-edition cloth-bound hardbacks, including their striking original black-and-white illustrations. In the spirit of the season (and in the hope that these beautiful books might be pressed into the hands of young people this Christmas) we’d like to offer all readers a free copy of Brendon Chase (RRP £20) when buying the pair of The Little Grey Men and Down the Bright Stream (RRP £36). Use the code CHASE at the checkout or over the phone.
With best wishes, as ever, from the SF office staff
