Adrian Bell, A Countryman’s Winter Notebook

The Halesworth Bookshop & Slightly Foxed

Richard Hawking & Professor Jules Pretty in conversation at The Cut, Halesworth

A Countryman’s Winter Notebook is a new collection of essays by the late Adrian Bell who wrote about the people and the places of the East Anglian countryside in the Eastern Daily Press in a series of weekly columns from 1950 to 1980. Compiled and introduced by Richard Hawking and produced by Slightly Foxed as a collectable hardback edition, most of these essays have never been republished until now. With illustrations by Suffolk artist Beth Knight.

On the evening of Tuesday 26 October 2021, guests gathered at The Cut in Halesworth, Suffolk, to listen to Richard Hawking in conversation with Jules Pretty about Adrian Bell and the contents of this special new edition. They stocked up on copies and had them signed by Richard, and tucked in to biscuits bearing Beth Knight’s illustrations. Many thanks to all who attended!

RICHARD HAWKING is the author of At the Field’s Edge: Adrian Bell and the English Countryside.

JULES PRETTY, Professor of Environment and Society at the University of Essex, is the author of many books including This Luminous Coast and The East Country.
