Bookshop of the Quarter: Winter 2014

Golden Hare Books is a gem of a bookshop over the border in Edinburgh. Just last month they moved from historic Grassmarket to new premises in St Stephen Street, Stockbridge, and are open for business once again, ready to welcome customers old and new.

Ian Macbeth and his fellow booksellers are dedicated not only to the love of reading, but also to the book as a beautiful, life-enriching object of desire in its own right. We of course knew they felt this way as they stock Slightly Foxed each and every quarter, but this sentiment is extended to all books chosen for their shelves. The hand-picked selection is composed of a vast range of international literary fiction and poetry, nonfiction of all kinds, covetable contemporary art and design and a children’s section that will enchant and enrapture readers both young and old.

Whenever we receive a newsletter from Golden Hare Books we yearn to live closer to Edinburgh, tempted by the monthly get-togethers and exciting one-off events. Not only do they run a book group, but also a monthly ‘Pass on a Poem’ evening where guests can read and listen to live poetry, and regular literary salons celebrating a range of fascinating subjects, from ‘Whisky and Words’ to ‘The Queer Canon’. All details of events and Golden Hare goings-on can be found on their very attractive website, over which an athletic hare always leaps.
