Elisabeth Russell Taylor was born in 1930 and grew up in Hampstead. She has since lived in Switzerland, Paris and South Africa, before settling back in London. She has written six novels, three short-story collections, four books for children, five works of nonfiction, as well as numerous reviews and articles. Many of her works have been translated into foreign languages, and her stories have been broadcast on BBC Radio 4. She has also completed a PhD, and taught novel writing courses at King’s and Royal Holloway.

Every year as many as eleven thousand novels may be published in Britain, of which only a handful amount to much. So it is all the more surprising to come across a masterpiece. Such is Embers by the Hungarian writer Sándor Márai. I found myself so gripped by this elegiac novel, so seduced by its limpid prose, that when I came to the final page I turned back to the first and began to reread.

A lyrical hymn to the irrecoverable past, Robin Fedden’s memoir Chantemesle takes its title from the house in which he grew up, itself named after a tiny hamlet in the Île de France. Over the years, Chantemesle has been haunted by a succession of artists. It rises above a silver bend in the Seine, its back pressed against vast, grotesque outcrops of chalk scars wrapped in scrub, created by eruptions of the last Ice Age.

I knew nothing of this novel or its author until a few years ago, when I was writing about the Italian poet and philosopher Leopardi and needed to place this tormented genius against a real background.
