Raised in rural Shropshire, Martin Williams accumulated fifteen years’ experience in the commercial art world, with successive roles at Christie’s, Bonhams and Sotheby’s Institute of Art. In 2019, he developed the proposal that eventually resulted in his first book, The King is Dead, Long Live the King! Majesty, Mourning and Modernity in Edwardian Britain, which was published by Hodder & Stoughton in April 2023. A Times ‘Book of the Week’ and a Country Life ‘Book of the Year’, it was hailed as ‘fascinating and absorbing’ by Hugo Vickers, ‘witty, informative and immensely readable’ by Miranda Seymour and ‘compulsory reading’ by Dame Joanna Lumley.

A contributor to Country Life, The Field and Slightly Foxed, Martin has delivered the annual Paul Mellon lecture for the British Sporting Art Trust, was the guest speaker at the annual general meeting of Historic Houses (Thames and Chilterns division) and addressed an academic conference at King’s College, London on lessons and take-aways from the coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla. In the US, he has spoken at Yale University, the Colony Club, the Harvard Club and Charleston Library Society, besides delivering online lectures for American Ancestors and History Extra, the podcast of BBC History Magazine and BBC History Revealed.

Martin is currently working on his second book, the authorised history of Claridge’s, which is scheduled for publication by Hodder & Stoughton in late 2026. In the meantime, he is assisting the National Portrait Gallery in London with the cataloguing of its Edwardian photographic holdings.
