Lou Tonkin is an artist and printmaker from Cornwall. Her work sings of the natural world, and the inspiration for her intricately detailed linocuts comes from the sea and the lanes, fields, creeks and hedgerows that surround her home and garden.
She is fascinated by nature and will sit for hours watching birds flitting in and out of hedgerows, sketching out the feel and shape of them, capturing their sense of movement and brief moments of stillness. Later, back in her studio in a converted bus shed near Falmouth, she’ll pore over her collection of bird and insect books, fleshing out the detail and making her hand-cut relief blocks.
