Love, War and the Countess | Presents for Mothering Sunday & Other Occasions

Hermione, Countess of Ranfurly
To War with Whitaker

Hermione, Countess of Ranfurly and her husband Dan had been married for less than a year when he was called up in September 1939. Their characterful cook-butler Whitaker volunteered to go with him, but Yeomanry rules decreed that though officers could take their servants to war they could not take their wives. Undeterred however, Hermione immediately set off for Egypt in pursuit. This sparkling diary, written on-the-hoof throughout the war, is both a passionate love story and a unique behind-the-scenes picture of the war in the Middle East and Europe as seen by a very unconventional aristocrat.

With Mothering Sunday approaching we thought our readers might appreciate a few bookish present ideas – for a mother, a fellow booklover or yourself – beginning with the latest in our series of limited-edition cloth-bound pocket hardbacks: Hermione Ranfurly’s To War with Whitaker.

Please read the newsletter for Peter J. Conradi’s preface to this wonderful book and, to follow, a selection of present suggestions for Mothering Sunday or any other occasion.

With best wishes, as ever, from the SF office staff
Jennie, Anna, Hattie, Jess & Helen
