Patrick Leigh Fermor, From the Slightly Foxed Archives, June Newsletter 2023

Patrick Leigh Fermor | Off All the Standard Maps | From the Slightly Foxed archives

Greetings, dear readers, from SF HQ. We’re up to our elbows in your orders for the recommended reading on offer in our new Readers’ Catalogue and are busy working our way through the piles of books waiting patiently at the packing desk to be parcelled up and sent off around the world. Meantime, we thought we’d provide you with some more good reading to tide you over while you wait for your books to arrive.

Summer and, indeed, our summer holidays are approaching here in the UK but they’re still rather too far away for our liking. In light of this, we’ve travelled back into the archives and landed on a delightful article from Slightly Foxed Issue No. 2 by Tim Mackintosh-Smith. In it we’re transported to Greece, and more specifically Roumeli, by the great travel writer Patrick Leigh Fermor. Please find an extract from Tim’s article below, together with a link to read the full article on the Slightly Foxed website.

You’ll also find a selection of other literary escapes and potential vacation volumes, as well as travel writing to inspire and enjoy this summer. We also thought we’d draw your attention to the episode of our podcast on Patrick Leigh Fermor in which Artemis Cooper, Paddy’s biographer, and Nick Hunt, author of Walking the Woods and the Water, join the Slightly Foxed team to explore the life and literary work of this famously idiosyncratic traveller.

We do hope you’ll enjoy delving into Tim’s article on Roumeli and browsing our book recommendations. Happy weekend one and all!

With best wishes, as ever, from the SF office staff
Hattie, Jess & Jemima
