The Imitation of the Rose is considered a sequel of sorts to Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper.

Laura returns home having been hospitalized with an undisclosed mental illness. In the claustrophobia of her confinement, she becomes increasingly fixated on a vase of flowers and all that they come to represent. The story was first published in 1960 as part of the short story collection Family Ties.
