Erdrich travels with her young daughter to southern Ontario where her ancestors lived for centuries.
She brings to life the Ojibwe’s sacred spirits and songs, their language and sorrows, and considers the many ways in which her tribe – whose name refers to the word ozhibii’ige, ‘to write’ – have influenced her. Drawing on her ancestors’ tradition of storytelling, she weaves together history, mythology and memoir to enchanting effect.
