Our Yorkshire printers Smith Settle, have been with us from the beginning and are true friends of Slightly Foxed. Founded in 1981, they are among the now rare breed of craftsmen printers, producing beautiful leather-bound hand-sewn books for the likes of the Folio Society. It’s to them that we owe the consistently high standard of printing and elegant appearance of Slightly Foxed and of our books. Smith Settle produces Slightly Foxed Editions, Slightly Foxed Cubs, Slightly Foxed Paperbacks as well as our magazine slipcases, postcards, catalogues, stationery and all other Slightly Foxed publications. You can watch a three minute film of Slightly Foxed Edition, Mango & Mimosa being printed and bound below.
How interesting this snippet on the creation of a printed book. Back on my family tree in 1871 I have the wife of a rather dubious ancestor listed on the Census as a ‘book folder’. I assume she’s performing one of the tasks depicted in the film and probably in less salubrious surroundings. As her husband, noted as a Carpenter and Joiner, is only otherwise known to me from the Police News for his part in a burial society scam, I think she is possibly the family’s main wage-earner.
I do love the nooks and crannies of genealogy.
Best wishes to you all from these cold dark days in northern November.
