The days have been growing steadily darker and, as October comes to its close, the Hoxton streets have become scattered with dark overcoats, dusted off after months at the back of a cupboard. Over at Slightly Foxed HQ, we have finally relented and turned on the heating.
Since the release of the Slightly Foxed Podcast, Episode 55: At Home with the Brontës, we’ve all been in the mood for some deliciously gothic autumnal reading to match the gloomy weather. All that talk of graveyards, stony buildings and wild windy moors has inspired a craving for strange, haunting tales, perfect to curl up with from the safety of a sofa during the darker evenings.
Whilst flicking through back issues of Slightly Foxed we came across a piece by author Kate Young on Shirley Jackson’s novel We Have Always Lived in the Castle – a book which most certainly fits our eerie criteria.
Today, we thought we would share Kate’s article in full and offer a discount on Slightly Foxed Issue 79, in which the piece appeared.
Please scroll on for a selection of gothic reading suggestions and a word from our friends at The Fence magazine.
With best wishes from the SF staff
