Born in Germany to aristocratic parents in 1911, Sybille Bedford wrote her novel, A Legacy, in her forties and continued to write until her early nineties, producing some of the most original novels, memoirs and travel books of the twentieth century.
A lover of French wine and cuisine, and admired by her peers, she roamed from country to country – Germany, France, England, Italy and the United States – in search of fresh experience, with ear and eye attuned to her surroundings, typewriter at the ready.
